Super Middleweight (168 pounds) 10-Round Match:
Allan Green (27-1, 19 KO's, 168 pounds) vs. Carlos De Leon, Jr. (21-2-2, 14 KO's, 168 pounds)
Green had a good amateur boxing career that culminated when he the 2002 National Golden Gloves Championship at 178 pounds.
The Tulsa, Oklahoman suffered his only loss via unanimous decision in a match with Edison Miranda on March 3, 2007 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente. (That was the first match recapped.) Green knocked down Miranda in round 8, but was dominated for the rest of the match. The Oklahoman was frequently lost focus in the match and was complaining to the referee about Miranda's tactics. Green's last match was a technical knockout victory at 2:42 of round 7 over Carl Daniels in a scheduled 8-rounder on November 15, 2008 at the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee. Green took the match after an over 10-month long layoff due to medical reasons. Therefore, Green went from facing top level opposition to Daniels who was 1-10 in his last 11 matches with 6 of those losses coming by way of knockout.
Green is The Ring magazine's number 8 contender to their vacant championship at 168 pounds.
De Leon appears to have been brought in to lose. The native of Puerto Rico has only been in one other scheduled 10-round match. In that match on April 11, 2008 at Miccosukee Resort & Gaming in Miami, Florida versus the much less heralded James McGirt, Jr., De Leon was knocked down in round 6. However, De Leon came back to score a knockout in round 7. That win was considered to not reflect so much on De Leon's greatness, but show that McGirt was not going to be a top level boxer.
De Leon's last match, and his only match since facing McGirt, was a technical knockout at 2:19 of round 3 in a scheduled 6-rounder over Brad Austin on November 10, 2008 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Austin entered the match with a record of 8-4 with those 4 losses coming in his last 6 matches.
De Leon is unranked by The Ring, but ranked by boxrec.com as the number 19 boxer in the world at 168 pounds.
Both boxers are 29-years-old. Green has the height advantage standing 6' 1" tall, while De Leon stands 6' tall. The Oklahoman has the reach advantage with a 75" wingspan, compared to the 74" wingspan of De Leon. Neither boxers' unofficial weight approaching match time is available. However, the numbers suggest Green should be the slightly heavier boxer in the ring. De Leon is naturally left-handed, but both boxers will employ the orthodox stance.
The unified rules of boxing are in effect for this event. The judges keeping official score of this match are from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. The referee is Joey Lupino.
Round 1 is contested mostly on the outside where Green is dominant. Green takes round 1, 10-9. With 2:26 to go in round 2, De Leon is caught with a devastating left hook and goes crashing to the canvas. De Leon may not beat the count. De Leon staggers up at 7 and is allowed to continue with 2:10 go in the round. However, De Leon is in real bad shape and may not make it out of this round. A wide right hook sends De Leon to the mat for the second time in round 2 with 2:00 to go in the round. Green did not catch De Leon with a clean hard punch to score the second knockdown. De Leon is simply too hurt to adequately defend himself anymore. The referee is going to allow De Leon to continue with 1:45 to go still in round 2. The 3 knockdown rule is not in effect. However, De Leon's legs appear gone. Unless Green punches himself out, De Leon will be knocked out this round. Two right hooks from Green send De Leon falling into the ropes then down to the canvas for the third time with 1:31 to go in round 2. The referee has to stop it here. For some reason the referee is going to put in a count. That should send De Leon's corner racing into the ring to throw in the towel. De Leon can no longer defend himself and is only going to be badly hurt by being sent back into action. The referee tells De Leon he is getting one more chance and allows the boxer to continue with still 1:13 to go in the round. This is a recklessly unsafe decision by the referee. De Leon takes 2 more right hands and goes down for a fourth and completely unnecessary time with 1:07 to go in round 2. The referee waved off the match the instant De Leon hit the mat. De Leon should never have been allowed to be knocked down 4-times. It was clear De Leon had no chance to survive the round after the second knockdown. Allowing De Leon to continue after the third knockdown was inviting serious injury. That is a complete failure on the part of the referee and De Leon's corner. After the match, Green pointed to Lucian Bute in the crowd. Bute holds a belt at 168 pounds, but has a mandatory defense against Librado Andrade next.
The official outcome courtesy of the always "Classy" Jimmy Lennon, Jr. is that at: 1:06 of round 2 (?) the referee has called a stop to this contest making the winner by technical knockout, "Sweetness" Allan Green. The win moves Green to 28-1 with now 20 wins coming by way of knockout.
Green said in his post match interview that he expected the match to be this easy, because De Leon historically has a weak chin. The Oklahoman wants to face the winner of the main event. Green ended by predicting Froch to win the main event. However, Green mispronounced Froch's name repeatedly.
The Oklahoman was outstanding in this match. He showed power in both hands and put on an exciting performance. Green said he allowed himself to be hit intentionally. Those isolated defensive lapses are the only things that could be criticized about his performance in this match. Green's next match should be against the winner of the main event.
De Leon was bad in this match. He showed good power, but poor defense and boxing skills. De Leon had difficulty boxing on the outside and did not recover well from the knockdowns. He would probably be best served facing soft opponents off television where his poor defense and weak chin would not be exposed.
This event was very enjoyable to watch and is a recommended watch. This match is short, but action packed.
