Final Super Six World Boxing Classic Group Stage 2 Standings

The final match of Group Stage 2 of the Super Six World Boxing Classic was held on June 19 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena (Oracle Arena) in Oakland, California. There Andre Ward defeated Allan Green via unanimous decision with the judges scoring the match: 120-108, 120-108, 120-108. That victory gives Ward 2 more points and assures him a spot in the semi-finals. However, with 1 round to go all 5 other competitors can still advance. The updated standings are below, and they will be explained further at the bottom:

Ward has the lead and a guaranteed place in the semi-finals with his victories Froch and Green. The next 4 boxers in the standings all have 1 win. However, Abraham is sole possession of second place via his knockout in Group Stage 1 of Jermain Taylor, who has since been replaced by Allan Green. The tie-breaker for the 3-way tie between Froch, Kessler and Dirrell is judges' points in favor. That puts Froch in third, Kessler in fourth and Dirrell in fifth. As a replacement, Green inherited the tie-breakers of the lowest placed boxer. That added to his loss to Ward leaves him in last place. Still, Green can actually advance to the semi-finals as the number 3 seed under the right set of circumstances.

The next round begins of September 25 with Froch facing Abraham and Ward vs. Dirrell. It will conclude a few weeks later with Kessler vs. Green. Barring an upset, it looks like at least 1 boxer with only 1 win is going to make the semi-finals. There is even an outside chance that 2 boxers with only 1 victory in the modified round robin make the semi-finals. This means the tie-breakers are going to be critical in determining who advances in this innovative tournament.
